[12:18 pm] Goblet of Fire!

Ok ok, I have to admit that I was kiasu and SO had to watch the latest installment of Harry Potter on the opening night. I bought the tickets ONE day in advance, and our seating was not too bad, considering for an earlier show there were only second and first row seats.

Even skipped my Jam classes so that I won't feel tired and fall asleep during the movie! :P

Had dinner BKT with the gang and 2 more gym friends, Steve and May. I think we ordered a little too much and couldn't really finish everything. We had time so we headed over to Baskin Robbins for some ice-cream (May's fave orgasm, or so she claims) and I got myself some banana flavoured ice-cream which was also the flavour of the month.

The cinema was rather packed, all waiting in anticipation for the movie.

And the movie was good!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire this time around was way darker, compared to the 3rd instalment, Prizoner of Azkaban.

The screenplay was darker, hence the PG rating in the USA. The movie catered more for mature audiences, and hence didn't really disappoint.

The Quidditch World Cup scenes were awesome, just like what I'd imagine it to be. The TriWizard Tournament scenes were cool as well, especially the first task involving the Dragons. But the movie was juz 2 1/2 hours, and it was impossible to fit the whole book within that period. And sadly, this was perhaps one of the shortcoming of the movie, where certain events were not fully explained, and that could have impacted the understanding of the movie.

SPOILER ALERT! Read at own risk :P

One such scene was the scene involving Potter and Lord Voldemort's duel, of which as they both casted their spells, an event took place (which later was revealed by Dumbledore to be "priori incantatem"). Those who have not read the book perhaps won't understand how Harry could have possibly averted Voldemort's Avada Kedavra curse. As those who have read the book would know, that in each wand, there was a wand core substance and in this case, both wands actually contain the feather of a Phoenix (it's the feather from Fawkes, Dumbledore's Phoenix and apparently Fawkes only gave TWO feathers).

Apparently when two wands of the same core substance meet against each other, in this case, the wands will not cast against each other. If the master forces the wand to act, an event called the "priori incantatem" occurs whereby a reverse spell effect takes place. In this case, an imprint (or shadow) of the previous spell the wand casted appears. In the book, this could also happen as priori incantatem is also a spell, which was casted by Amos Diggory to find out if Potter casted the Dark Mark, which of course didn't make it to the movie.

More questions arise like how did Barty Crouch escape from Azkaban and the omission of certain characters like Bertha Jonkins, Sirius Black etc didn't really make the movie feel complete.

However, other memorable scenes include Harry and a very 'humsup' Moaning Myrtle in the pool, the first Triwizard Tournament task, the Quidditch World Cup scenes, some scenes involving the Pensieve specifically Barty Crouch Jr's hearing, scenes involving the Hogwartz teachers and Dumbledore, and the Return of Voldemort.

The jokes this time are funnier, and the movie this time has a more mature feel, with more adult themes (like the birds and the bees, haha) and it overall makes a good watch.

Till then,

Priori Incantatem! :D

SpikyTux: It's in the book, of course. Seeing you cannot remember the book, I'll explain here. :P *just kidding*

Barty Crouch's wife is sick and dying. She begged Barty Crouch to let her in Azkaban in exchange for their son's freedom. Barty Crouch has no love for Barty Crouch Jr. But he loves his wife.

So they planned it - they visit Barty Crouch Jr. at Azkaban. While in the cell, Both Mrs Crouch and her son took Polyjuice potion. And she became Barty Crouch Jr and while her son becomes her.

The dementors have no eyes. They sense one healthy and sick people going in, and they sense one healthy and sick people going out.

Mrs. Crouch died shortly afterwards and the dementors buried her outside the walls under her son's name.

Meanwhile, Barty Crouch uses the Imperius curse to imprison his son. Barty Crouch Jr is at the world cup and Winky, afraid of heights, is unable to control Barty Crouch Jr. during the world cup. Barty Crouch Jr stole Harry's wand and cast the Dark Mark at the chaos after the world cup, when several Death Eaters was playing a foold with the muggles. He cast the Dark Mark to scare the Death Eaters for their betrayal to the Dark Lord.

Lord Voldermort learned of his loyal servant, and the Triwizard tournaments, from Bertha Jorkins, who was in Albania for holiday. He extracted memories from Bertha Jorkins even though her memory is modified. Because of the powerful effect, Berkin Jorkins is next to useless after Voldermort extracted the memory and he killed her.

Voldermort and Wormtail went to Crouch's house and imprisoned Crouch, then captured Mad Eye and have him imprisoned under imperius curse also so Crouch Jr can take polyjuice potion and pretend to be Mad Eye.

yw[2k]: Wah... Spiky is Potter-Pedia! :P

SpikyTux: Watched it on Friday - if you don't read the book, it's very messy and you won't understand it.

The effects are good though.

yw[2k]: I agree...

One question... How come Dumbledore can't detect the fake Moody?
(Posted on 11-21-05 at 12:02 pm)
SpikyTux: The mind is not an open book - you don't read someone's mind.

The fake Moody uses polyjuice potion to disguise as Moody, and imprisoned teh real one so he can learn all the things about Moody.

Legilimency can extract memories and feelings of someone. But it works if the person is unprepared - that is - if the person didn't use Occlumency to block out intrusions.

And anyway, I'm sure Dumbledore doesn't use Legilimency on everyone. And he knows immediately when Moody wants to take Harry away after Harry arrived back at Hogwarts ground - the real Moody won't do that.

yw[2k]: Ah... I didn't really notice this part. Anyway, will be watching it again... Haha!
(Posted on 11-21-05 at 2:54 pm)
SpikyTux: As I said, it's described clearly in the book.
