According to eye-witnesses...

The early report is that Doug Wilson bettered James White in the great debate Friday night. Are Roman Catholics Members of the New Covenant? will be available as audio or video sometime soon.

I attended. I think I should post about the debate - I have notes (five pages).

Yes, John - please do!

Yes, John, I agree. I'd love to hear your take.

Kerry beat Bush in three debates :)

You must be swayed by popular media. :)

Yeah right, me the libertarian Reformed Christian. I'm such the modern media influenced cliche.

I was just making an observation about "beating" people in debates. In fact, you'll note that chest thumping and back patting about "beating" people in a debate is one of the things that you find much of at aomin.

Re4'd, the "early" report came from aomin fans.

Doug Wilson's opening statement is on his blog. Well worth reading.

How is a debate between two believing Christians 'won'?

- Barb | 11.10.04 | 1:50 pm

Micah, I don't know that debates are really won or lost in spite of Re4'd's comment (among knowlegeable debate partners anyway.). I think it can be said that one can make a better case than one's opponenet.

I'm verty much looking forward to hearing the debate first hand.

I was at the debate and I concluded that James White clearly lost it. Douglas Wilson's citation of 1 Cor. 10 reduced James to stuttering and speechlessness. I have never seen him lose his glibness in the way that he did here. Further his deployment of Heb.8:8-12 was marred by overinterpretation and eisegesis in the face of N.T. texts that contradict that extension. Finally the basic conception that founds his whole arguement was an extension of the distinction between visible and invisible church into a division between two entities grounded in totally different covenants. The first a social covenant only between people here on earth and the second a heavenly covenant between God and each individual elect person. I heard no valid arguments from Scripture that teach such a division and such a multiplication of the New Covenant into individual covenants for each separate elect person.
This is the first debate that I have seen James White lose so badly.

Barb et al., I finally posted my observation of the debate. It is not an editorial, but it is certainly (and necessarily) biased. I agree with Zuck - the division of the new covenant was unfounded.
