Favorite Poems | 9:01 PM

What is your favorite poem or prose? I hope it's not too late for a guy to start appreciating such things. I don't actually have a favorite since only lately did it occur to me what a splindid art/communication form poetry is. At the conference on types and antitypes we attended recently we heard and read some great poetry. I found out that there can be multiple levels of meaning and typology in many poems. Here's one example:
Eternity and time confound
The buckling minds of mortal men,
Who rail at God as though He were
A lesser god, or one of them.
They hate discriminating love,
And drag it into human courts
To try to crucify the cross.
"Will you try Me?" our Lord retorts.
Though pearls may fall beneath the swine
They do not therefore cease to be,
And trampling won't deface a shine
Decreed before eternity.
So hold your peace, rebellious pot,
The Lord is God - and you are not.
Doug Wilson from his book entitled Untune the Sky -
Occasional, Stammering Verse

Regret | 8:14 PM

So much regret but so much grace…

Since I rounded the big six-0 corner a couple of years ago I’m inclined to review my life more than I used to. I find that my memories seem to default to my regrets more often than not. I know one might be tempted to tell oneself, ‘why bother to reflect on your past at all if regrets keep coming up?’ But I think I’ve got it figured out – maybe a little.

It’s God’s Grace!

It almost never fails that when my overwhelming pride of life and the way I’ve hurt so many people marches across the screen of my mind, I’m overwhelmed by God’s free gift of salvation. It’s, well, automatic or something. The very next thing that pops into my mind is how much the second person of the Trinity LOVED me to become a human being and be crucified for my sin as my substitute. Talk about feeling grateful for peace of mind when finding that peace “B.C.” was completely out of my control and I had no way of changing.

So if you’re bugged about these little ugly sins (ok, not so little) that pop into your mind and tend to remind you what a hopeless selfish jerk you were before Christ, stop it. It’s likely God’s way of giving you a subtle reminder of how much deep dark you know what He’s brought you and me out of.

Psalm 101 | 10:51 AM

Psalm 101

I will sing of mercy and justice;
To You, O Lord, I will sing praises.

I will behave wisely in a perfect way.
Oh, when will You come to me?
I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.

I will set nothing wicked before my eyes;
I hate the work of those who fall away;
It shall not cling to me.
A perverse heart shall depart from me;
I will not know wickedness.

Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor,
Him I will destroy;
The one who has a haughty look and a proud heart,
Him I will not endure.

My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land,
That they may dwell with me;
He who walks in a perfect way,
He shall serve me.
He who works deceit shall not dwell within my house;
He who tells lies shall not continue in my presence.
Early I will destroy all the wicked of the land,
That I may cut off all the evildoers from the city of the Lord.
