Regrets ... I've had a few
Not quite sure why now, or how, but last September I pursuaded my employers to pay for some 'continuing professional development.' I'm now a student again, this time trying to get through an ACCA Diploma in Financial Management home study course. And I really regret starting it; it's got to be the most dull topic in the world.

I don't mean to insult any accountants that may be out there, but bloody hell I can feel consciousness slipping away even as I write about it now. Assets, liabilities, accrual, accelerated capital allowance, earnings per share.

I can only study at home when Little T has gone off to bed, and what with one thing and another I'm left with about an hour a night to work my way through these chuffing text books. Every night? Yeah sure. So things are progressing very slowly. They say it should only take a year. Lucky me. But if I stop I'll have to give my employers back the money they spent on registration and enrolment fees.

Last week some time my father-in-law gave me a lift to work, and conversation came round to this course and the problems I'm having sustaining motivation. (Not much of a conversation topic, I know, but I'm a little rusty on the whole father/son father-in-law/son-in-law thing.) He nodded and hmm-ed in a supportive, understanding way, and turned the conversation to his son, who has recently qualified as a doctor after studying for 6 years: this degree being his 2nd, his first was at Oxford (Classics, naturally).

An interesting comparison, I thought. Thanks for that, just what I needed.

What I really need now though is more coffee.
