What's Emma into these days?
(5 years)
Fairies, faery-folk, and creatures of legend. She is a true believer!
Truly realizing romantic relationships- she purports to have "crushes" (on Harry Potter of course, and sometimes also Legolas) Also tries to identify such relationships in strangers.
Doing her "work"- writing words and letters, and cutting and pasting
Harry Potter! Movies, books, and Legos.
Taking care of Daylen, her living doll.
Playing with all her little school buddies- an increasingly complicated social world!
Little House on the Prairie
Still spiders, snakes, and other creepy-crawlies
Collecting toys and consumerism. A disturbing but inevitable trend inherent to her social world. ("Catalina has a purple Littlest Pet Shop cat, and so I need one too!")
Drawing elaborate pictures, especially depicting movie scenes

A few of Daylen's favorite things
(14 months
Shaking his head "no". We shouldn't encourage it, but it is too funny- like a little drunken man with his head lolling back and forth on his neck!
Being on the move- no strollers thanks!
"Talking" on pretend and real telephones. He says "He-woah" and "Buh-bye"!
Dancing! He does the cutest little march in place with his feet.
Drinking water- he is obsessed with it!
Toys which he can fit a portion in his mouth (like the end of a rattle or peg) and then carry it around that way like a little puppy
Soft things- he will lay is face on them, or rub them on his cheek- socks, blankets, stuffed animals, etc.
Ducks- he gets so excited! Live animals in general all hilarious to him.
Talking! Lots and lots of word attempts.
Making animal noises- snake, bear and elephant. Too cute!
Being sang to- favorites include "5 little ducks" "Wheels on the Bus" and "Old MacDonald"
Getting (slightly) startled- he chortles with laughter!
Pointing, clapping and "sharing" items in his hand
Carrying shoes around the house.
Playing in the playhouse with the dishes and food.
Following Emma around!

A few new additions to the side columns on Day and Emma's doings.

Emma the scientist

Maybe Emma really will become a paleontologist! Only days after I read this report , and intended, but neglected to tell Emma about it, Emma looked musingly at a picture of a T-Rex in one of her books and remarked, "You know, my dinosaur-songs CD said T-Rex is fast, but I don't think they're right. I'm looking at that big heavy tail, and I'm thinking maybe it was kind of a slow runner." I don't mean to toot my child's horn here (ok I do) but geez!! Through her own observation, Emma came up with a revolutionary shift which took paleontologists about a century. Crazy.

Also, in another moment of synchronicity in scientific news, Emma very randomly asked for information about penguin ancestors today. Yahoo News supplied me nicely tonight with this breaking headline. Has Emma mentally tapped into the consciouness of the scientific community at large?

Spring Wrap-up Part 1

Backing up a bit here.....

In March Matt accepted a new job working as a Verizon Tech. More on that in a minute. He ended up with 2 paid weeks off before beginning the new position, so we decided to go to Las Vegas, capital of $5 steak dinners and free family entertainment, courtesy of a few comped hotel nights at the Orleans Casino. The hotel was slightly off strip which was fine since we had a car, and boasted a great pool which was certainly Emma's favorite part about the trip.
My favorite part was the Bellagio waters and gardens.

Daylen's favorite thing was probably the imported cheese plate at the Paris Hotel.......yum, blue cheese......

Matt per usual loved walking The Strip, and seeing all the hotels. So there was something for everyone!!

So back to Matt's job.....he finally got out of his stressful, micro-managed, poorly run, office job! After a full year of passing Verizon tech tests and interviews, he finally got an open spot- strangly, despite his lack of experience, he passed into the highest level of phone tech, and got the best possible position. He is thrilled with the independant work environment, the opportunity to learn a trade and of course the fabulous benefits, and overtime (yay union!) are nice too! He wne to through a 2 month training period in which he attended and passed pole climbing school and assorted other training classes. Just last week he got his own work van and began taking installation and repair calls on his own. The only drawbacks are that his work hours noe begin two hours earlier, and there is no guarantee of when he will be home since it all depends on the tasks of the afternoon. Which makes it tricky to plan anything. But the benefits far outway those issues for the time being. It is still so strange for me to picture Matt up on a pole putting in sophisticated wiring systems!!

Hopfully he'll write a blog one of these days about how things are going with this life-altering new job.

Around Easter we went up to Lodi for Easter, and also to go dress shopping for my sister Christie's upcoming nuptials and enjoyed getting to hang out with her and her fiancee Josh.

Emma had a ball dyeing eggs and insisted on hiding all the candy herself, which she found even more fun than finding it!

My parents also had a little party to celebrate Emma's fifth bday. Christie made a cake, and my dad organized games and a treasure hunt for some kids invited from thier church. Fun was had by all!

More Daylen

More updates on the rapidly developing Day-Day! He is now walking 99% exclusively, and says "Em-ma" in the the cutest singsong voice. He also says "OK," and uses it appropriately which is also extremely cute. Tonight, Matt took him into the living room and asked him if he wanted to sit on the floor and play with a toy together. Daylen said,
"O-tay" with a bit of a sigh in his voice (like he was somewhat reluctant to consent because he really wanted to get into the Legos Emma was working with!) Also, when ever he sees another child when we are out somewhere, he immediately starts waving vigorously at them- he recognizes that they have littleness in common!

Addendum 5/24- A few other Daylen tidbits: he is inexplicably terrified of the crow of a rooster (though not any other sounds or visuals so far), and has several new word attempts: moon, apple, Poppa, hot, uh-oh, Jot, (Great-Grandfather) and Tom (a favorite teacher in his class). He calls Grammy "Dada" somewhat inexplicably. The same dark hair or something? Maybe Grammy is just too hard a word!
Lately he loves to be in the playhouse with the play dishes and food, and is also quite fond of carrying shoes around all over the house. He is also rather obsessed with balloons, though he will mistake anthing suspended in the air (like a mobile) as such.

Yesterday I was watching him walk around the upstairs with his effcient little stagger, and I suddenly realized out-loud that he was toddling. He's a toddler, not a baby anymore!!! Emma immediately started to cry (really) and said mournfully, "no more baby-cuteness...."

All about Day-Day

Yep, we'll be calling him that into his teenage years....

Daylen is such a joy and delight these days. He isn't the little "angry guy" he used to be (at least not often) now that he can both get himself around, and communicate.

Actually, it is pretty funny when we tell him he can't do something, because he makes this pouty face and little fake cry you usually only get from older kids. Obnoxious when Emma does it, but adorable on a baby because it seems so out of place.

He continues to be hyper-tactile, loving to grab faces, put his hand into people's mouths (disconcerting for non-family members!) and is nearly obsessed with drinking water. Even when I know he's not thirsty, he will almost musingly take long sucks from his sippy-cup. I think he just enjoys the sensation. It is so funny to have a baby who reacts so strongly whenever he sees a cup or glass anywhere. He will immediately hold it up, or point to it, and demand (loudly!) that he get some water in it RIGHT NOW. And don't even get me started on actually drinking something in front of him- he goes crazy if you don't share!

These days he is still a voracious eater- he literally eats the same amount of food everyday that I do. If only I had his energy, think how skinny I would be. Nowdays however, he is much pickier, which is something we're going to have to break him of. It took a lot of hard work to get Emma to be the fish, goat cheese, sushi, orange marmalade girl she is today, but well worth the effort. On the upside, Day tends to enjoy strongly flavored foods, but lately, his main staples are cheese of anykind, and all bread products. Forget anything green.

He's still nursing, but a lot less frequently due to my weaning efforts a couple of months ago when he started biting hard every single time he nursed. For weeks. Luckily, before I cut out the last 3 or 4 feedings, he quit chomping on me entirely. I think he finally caught on that his favorite food source was getting cut off!

The sleeping is a lot better these days. He is going 8 or 9 hours through the night which is a huge deal to us. Plus he is sleeping in his own crib exclusively so our sleeping arrangements are a bit more traditional lately.

He started taking steps about 5 weeks ago, though he still isn't completely steady and only walks about 50% of the time. Usually only in a comfort zone and for a cheering audience. After all, crawling is so much more efficient and quick for him, why bother with the effort of balancing if there isn't a fanclub present?

Actually, we were pretty suprised he wasn't walking long before now, since he has been cruising on furniture for over 4 months.

*Usually* (averages are pretty meaningless with babies after all!) that is only a brief stage right before walking. But Day's ok with slow transitions, and so are we.

He's really much less of a physical daredevil than Emma was at his age, which actually is nice. While he is pretty "busy" he is only just now beginning to explore unfamilar terrain like the stairs and unoccupied rooms. Emma was all over the stairs by 8 months. Also, her transition period from crawl to walk was days, not months.

(The above is Emma by the way.)

It is inevitable I suppose to compare your second child to the first. You know they are different people, but you can only refer to your previous experience. Especially when your kids are like clones.

On that tangent, I had the oddest moment the other day while bathing the kids. Both of them had their backs to me, and they have the exact same color and texture of hair. The same color of skin, and veins tracing through. And Daylen looks so much like Emma as a baby. For a moment, I so strongly felt that it was not really two people, but an older and younger version of the same person- as though they had merged. Bizarre and sort of existentially comforting, like I was re-living the best parts of my life in a continual loop. Which in a way, I suppose I am.

Speaking of identity confusion, Emma is so tired of seeing pictures of herself and mistaking them for Daylen. She recently saw one at Lodi, and told me "Please do not tell me that is me. I will not believe you. When are we going to look different? This is just too confusing!"

Actually, back to the point of sibling comparison, I had begun to be worried about the fact that Daylen still has limited interest in reading books (other than touch and feel, or lift the flap- they must be tactile), whereas Emma was turning the pages by 6 months, and by a year, would sit in a lap and read for a good half-hour. I had been telling Matt it did not matter if he wasn't as smart as Emma, that we would love him for all his other wonderful qualities. Silly me to have such a limited scope of intelligence! While he may not want to sit long in a lap, he is already incredibly verbal- one indication at least that he can keep up just fine. (Surpassing Emma at the same age believe it or not- who says boys are always later to talk?!) So far his repertoire includes: Mama, Dada, Sissy (Emma), duck, bird, ball, balloon, nurse, Nana, more, bread, bottle, yeah, up and more I'm not thinking of at the moment. (Emma was mildly dissapointed he called her by a nickname first rather than her actual name. Matt and I on the other hand, find it adorable!) True, he doesn't say most of them well, but he points to the item and recognizably vocalizes the first consonant and vowel, and that is enough to get his point across. Thank god- I'm looking forward to the days when he doesn't scream in frustration that we don't speak baby! He gets so delighted when we understand what he is attempting to say! Funnily, he is much less interested in signing than Emma (which may be why he says so many more words than Emma did at 12 months). We have been trying for a good 8 months on signing, and other than "nurse" (which he started signing at the tender age of 7 months!) nothing else has cought on consistently. The boy just wants to speak!

He is in such an adorable stage, so quick to belly-laugh, sweetly affectionate (loves gives open-mouth wet kisses!) and cuddly. He also loves to share, and will even offer us food straight out of his mouth. Yum! He loves cracking us up with baby-tricks like animal noises on demand (snake is the cutest one) and just generally interacting and communicating with us.   Maybe we could do one more baby. I have to give myself that out, or I would be mourning the passing of his babyhood too greatly.

*Addendum* Proving once again that once you think you'be got your baby figured out, they will always surprise you, the day after writing the blog, Daylen sat in my lap for a good 20-30 minutes reading "bu, bu, bu" (books), and one of them ("Guess what Cookie Monster's Making") we read 5 times- a record! Then the next day at school he used two new signs, for "more" and "all done". He likes to keep us guessing.
