(You have a total control over the html code of these pages.)
You can make your form's fields to remember the information your visitors have entered, so he/she won't have to re-enter it every time he/she wants to post a new comment.
Note that you can block IPs from posting comments on your entries if you wish, in order to prevent spamming. Here is an example of comments page.

Page Hit Counter

Another interesting feature Upsaid offers is the Page Hit Counter. Once again, you have more control over your Hit Counter than any other hit counter service offers. The most interesting feature probably the fact that you can yourself chose the images which compose your counter's numbers, so you have total control on what your counter will look like. Of course, there is no obligation to use an image-based counter; a simple text based counter is also available.

Other Hit Counter features include:

  • Chose whether leading zeros are displayed or not. (e.g. 215 or 00215)
  • Chose how long the refresh detection takes effect. This gives you the possibility to know how many "visitors" you get, as opposed to simple page hits.
  • Chose whether the counter is incremented even if it is not displayed on your journal.
Sidebars templates
The "Sidebars" templates are the HTML templates meant to contain the data which is commonly displayed on Web Journals sidebars, which are displayed besides the journal entries. (See the image below.)

The fact this content is included in separate templates allow you to easily update this part of your journal without having to edit your Main Pages templates.

Upsaid Columns
The "Upsaid Columns" are used to update you page's columns easily, without having to edit the HTML templates. We call "columns" the list of links, information about you, etc. which web loggers usually display on their journal's sidebars.

Following is a detailed example on how this feature can be used. Let's assume that you want to display some basic information about yourself on your sidebar. The first step would be to enter the following values one of the Upsaid columns:

Once that is done, edit this column's template to give it the right format:

All there is left to do is type the appropriate variable in the sidebar template where you want this column to appear:

Quotes display
This feature allows you to create a list of quotes, from which one quote will be selected and printed on you journal.

There are three different display modes, which are:

  • Random : Select this option to have your quotes randomly selected every time a person views your journal.

  • Sequence : Selecting this option will make your quotes to be displayed in the same order you have added them to your quotes list.

  • Periodical : This option is identical to 'Sequence', except that instead of changing the quote each time the page is displayed, it will change it every given amount of time. An example of use for this option would be a 'quote/joke of the day' display.

Quick Posts
The 'Quick post' feature allows you to post entries on your Upsaid journal, without having to log into your Upsaid account. Instead, entries are posted from a much lighter page which can be found at the following address:

http://www.upsaid.com/post.php

When the Upsaid account is created, it's Main Page Sidebar already include a link which make this page appear in a popup. This popup can also be brought up very quickly by using a browser's "Links" feature, as illustrated below:

Please refer to the Upsaid Control menu for information on how this can be achieved.

Post entries via e-mail

Upsaid gives you the possibility to post entries via the use of e-mails. This will prove very useful when you are away from home, and the computer you are using doesn't support cookies, preventing you from logging into your control menu.

Post entries via xml-rpc

Thanks to the xml-rpc technology, it is possible to post, edit or delete entries through the use of (free) third party softwares, such as w.bloggar.

If you are interested in knowing what xml-rpc is exactly and how it works, please head to the official xml-rpc website.

Search and replace

This feature allows you to quickly replace a word with another word in all or some of your entries. This should be very helpful if you tend to do the same typos over and over.

When doing a "Search and replace", you can chose in which parts of the entries (title and/or body) the replacements will be made, and in which author(s)'s entries they will be made.

Upsaid buddies list
Be notified when your fellow Upsaid bloggers post new entries on their journals thanks to Upsaid's buddies list.
Every time you sign into your Upsaid control menu, a list of all your Upsaid buddies who have updated their journals since the last time you signed in will be displayed. All you will have to do then is click on their usernames to quickly check their last entries. You may add up to fifty Upsaid members to your buddies list.
Extra pages

In addition to your journal and GuestBook, Upsaid allows you to create other HTML pages which aren't necessarily related to your journal. You can place anything you wish on these pages; you may for example create a web page dedicated to yourself or your interests. Needless to mention, you have total control over these page's HTML code, and can apply premade templates to match with your journal's layout. Up to thirty extra pages can be created.

Main page extra values
The main extras are used to change a text that is displayed on any of the main pages, without having to edit the templates. You have the possibility to use two "Main Extras". They can be updated by clicking on "Update Extras values" on the control panel. You can also update them when you add a new entry.

Use Example: You want to tell your visitors when the next update will take place. Then, you would simply have to enter this date in one of the two "Main Extras" fields, and they will show anywhere you placed the !!mainextra1!!. (or !!mainextra2!! if you used the second field)

One of the great features you can only find at Upsaid is the capability of displaying two different entry templates on the same page. This may sound a little confusing, but this example of template should make it clearer. As you can see, the background color of entries posted on Oct. 24 is different from the background color of entries posted on Oct. 23.

Over 60 variables can be used in order to link the various templates that can compose your web journal. If you wish to get a clearer picture of how Upsaid templates are built, you should have a look at our templates tutorials.

If you aren't big on HTML coding, fear not, there are many premade templates from which you can chose from! Our designers are always working on creating new templates, so check back often for new additions!

Layout randomization / Multiple layouts

The "Layout randomisation" feature allows you to create additional layouts for you journal. When a visitor views your journal, one of these layouts is randomly selected and displayed.
A list of your layouts can also be displayed on your journal to allow your visitors to chose which layout to display.

Customizable date templates

Upsaid is the only web journaling tool which allows the user to create his / her own personalized date templates.
This feature give you the possibility to display the weekdays, month days, and months in any language, or even display an image instead of text.

Here is an example of how to customize your date templates:

E-mail notifications

This option allows you to create a list of e-mail addresses to which an email is sent each time you post a new entry. You can choose whether the entry is included in this e-mail or not.

You also have to possibility to be notified by e-mail when someone posts a note on one of your entries, or signs your guestbook.

Calendar archiving

This option allows you to create a calendar of the current month. Every day of the month on which at least one entry has been posted is a link to either:

- the most recent entry posted on this day, or:
- an archives page which include all entries posted on this day.

You also have a total control over this calendar's templates, and it can be displayed on both your journal main page or your archives list page.

Here is an example of calendar:

Templates backup

This feature allows your to create backups of your HTML templates, which can be restored later on, as many times as you wish. Use this feature if you are afraid of screwing your templates when manipulating them, or if you wish to keep record of all the layouts you have created / used.

You can create up to 40 templates backups, which can include any of your templates, including Main Page, GuestBook, Web Poll, etc. templates.

Word censorship

If you find your visitors curse a little too much when posting comments, signing your GuestBook, or tagging your TagBoard, you may use this feature to prevent these curses from being displayed.

'Alias' username

The 'Alias username' allows you to use a second username, in addition to your original one. This means that your journal will have two different addresses, which are:

http://www.upsaid.com/username/ and http://www.upsaid.com/alias/

You can change your Alias username anytime you wish, as long as this username isn't already in use by another user.

Extended entries

This feature allows you to divide your entry into two parts. By doing this, you may display the the first part of the entry on your main page, as an introduction to the general entry. You can then display a "More" HTML link at the end of this entry's first part, linking to the comments page, which would include both parts of the entry.

Please click here to see an example of template using extended entries.

Download journal entries to .txt or .html files

This option allows you to create and download text files which include your journal entries, in order to keep backups.

Save entries as drafts

If you start typing an entry and don't have the time to finish it, no problem: you can just save what you've typed as a draft, and finish typing your entry later.

Entry Extra values

The "Entry Extras" are used to change a text that is displayed on the entry templates. You have the possibility to use two "Entry Extras" for each entry. You can also apply default values to these extras by going to "Update extra values" on the control menu. When adding a new entry, if the "Use" box is not checked, it will simply remove any text that has been entered. (The extra value will thus be displayed, but will simply be empty)

Use example: You want to show what music you are listening while you were typing this entry. Then go to "Update Extra values" and type something like "Currently listening: " in any of the "Entry Extra" fields. Now every time you go to "Add a new entry", "Currently listening: " will show on the "Entry Extra 1" (or "Entry Extra 2") field, and all you have to do is type the name of the song you are listening to.

Edit entries date / time

Upsaid allows you to post entries in the past or future. You can modify an entry's date and time at any time, and set it to anytime between 1970 and 2038.

'E-mail this entry' link

Allow you visitors to E-Mail your journal entries to their friends, by displaying an 'E-Mail this entry' link on your entry templates.
