The Wonderful Life of Taz & Storm or Schooling in the Real World!

[April 26 2003]

Hummingbirds/Butterflies Refuse to Attend Party with Reptiles!

So, our daily excursion today was attending the “XXXXX City” Butterfly and Humming Bird festival. Storm had talked it up all week and could not wait to see butterflies up close and personal. Taz on the other hand wished to stay home and read yet another book. Our conversation went something like this . . .

Taz, it's time to leave for the bug & bird festival, will you come on now--let's go, let's GO, LET’S GO".

“I hate these things Mom, can't I stay home?" replied Taz, my eldest child who seems to be allergic to crowds of people.

"Sure, you can stay home, but you'll miss all those repulsive and disgustingly ugly alligators and snakes that are going to be on display."

To which he replied, "Oh, you didn't say there would be fun stuff going on. How many snakes are going to be there, do you know what kind . . . aren't we suppose to be leaving, come on Storm, you’re making miss everything—stop being such a slow poke."

I most definitely out of necessity must get used to small-town life, as I was expecting blocks of activities and attractions--what we found was a gathering that barely took up 2 country blocks. There were some zoological points of interest consisting of a chicken the size of a medium dog for petting for which we were somewhat apprehensive about doing, a caged bobcat smaller than the chicken, a large alligator, a cooler full of mini-me baby alligators, and several boa constrictors, a king cobra and other nasties. Did I mention there weren't any butterflies or Humming birds present at this festival held in their honor? Did their reptilian guests eat them alive, or did the organizers fail to send our airborne guests of honor their invitations…hmm? We will never know...

Storm had such a blast; especially talking to the “Fairy Queen” that was present—with garden, live ladybugs and all. Storm was beside her self, as she had just walked into the middle of a scene from an Andrew Lang Fairy Tale book, and of course, we HAD to take their picture. Besides, petting the ostrich—I mean chicken--the other highlight for Storm was making kites (pix coming soon) while I read from a Myriad of books on butterflies and gardens to her while lounging in a comfy purple velvet armchair. On the other hand, Taz, the reptilian/amphibian man, spent every moment with those yucky creepy crawlies things. He actually had snakes all over him--yuck, yuck, icky, icky—YUK! I could not bear to look, however, we have a great picture with one of those mammoth wingless serpents wrapped around my son’s neck as he chased me around like a madman.

Another attraction that was new to us “city folk” was an Ol’ fashioned shoot out—the ten pace thing and all—it was pretty cool seeing how the West was won. On our way back to the car, we stopped by the Natural Preserve kiosk, and spoke to a gentle man that is the head of the park’s education section. The children asked him a million and one questions, and he asked them where they attended school, to which my angels sang in unison, “we’re home schooled”. Thus began a 20-minute dialog between adult mentor and children. We were given a business card so that we may call and join several cost-free classes held specifically for hs’ing families—ah the rewards to being a non-conformist!

Now off to fly those kites Storm made this morning. . .BYE!
